033A.1 Discovery Learning Center Intern, Grades 12, Semester, 2.50 credits

Students who have demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in education, building relationships with peers, and helping DLC students with academics and vocational skills may apply for a Discovery Learning Center Internship position. Responsibilities: Assist students with developing independent skills in the areas of functional academics, organization, social skills and vocational skills.  Students applying for this position should be able to demonstrate friendship, acceptance, and leadership to students in the DLC program. Activities will include assisting students during academic class time, vocational class time, possible community based learning trips, and social games.  A very limited number of interns will be accepted each semester during specific blocks as needed.  Interested students should make an appointment with Ms. Dillon and Mr. Bennett.  Ms. Dillon runs the functional academic portion of the DLC and Mr. Bennett runs the vocational portion of the DLC.

Students who have demonstrated peer mentorship skills, and have shown an interest in assisting Discovery Point students reach a level of independence in the community through life skills and career development skills may apply for a Discovery Point Internship position.  Students interested in career paths focused in human services such as special education, recreation and leisure services, personal care attendants, social work, behavior technicians, counselors, job and life coaches, adult and disability care services, etc. should apply.  Responsibilities: Learn various strategies in how to support young adults with disabilities in the community.  Assist students with developing independent skills in the areas of community engagement, social pragmatic, vocational, and daily living skills.  Students applying for this position should be able to demonstrate friendship, acceptance, and leadership to students in the Discovery Point program.  During community learning trips, interns, school staff, and Discovery Point students will work together to explore and learn about work and living opportunities in Swampscott and other surrounding towns. Activities will include assisting students during community based learning trips, leading vocation programs within the school and community, including but not limited to the Discovery Store, and YMCA, Swampscott Library, as well as assisting the Discovery Point staff with preparation of lessons, and developing social games.  Students should be able to commit to at least one class for one semester, or more preferably two consecutive classes per semester. A limited number of interns will be accepted each semester.  Interested students should make an appointment with Ms. Borden.
