School Council

Mrs Mussenden recruited our help! As Mrs Mussenden is our computing subject leader, she leads some assemblies on e-safety so that we are well informed about the uses of technology. As councillors, we feedback to our classes on which assemblies they would like more information on so that Mrs Mussenden can deliver assemblies which are relevant to us. This information was very useful - thank you!

We have been armed with a misson: to give our views on our current marking and feedback policy. The staff members are reviewing the marking and feedback policy and Miss Wilcox joined our weekly meeting to hear our views on the way our teachers current mark our work and give us feedback. We said we enjoy verbal feedback as it helps us understand difficult questions, we feel we have too many NTTs in some lessons (now try this) and it is confusing if teachers mark an improvement in pink or a strength in green. Miss Wilcox and Miss Aston feedback this back in our staff meetings and this helped us as a staff inform changes.
Now, we mark only in one colour to avoid confusion, we limit the amount of NTTs we use and we encourage the use of verbal feedback. Well done for making your voice heard Sunnymede Junior!
In addition to the survey, we also asked for our classes to share what they think is good about teaching and learning at Sunnymede Junior and what could be improved. Here are some of the things we said...
What is good about teaching and learning at Sunnymede?
-Teachers are good at explaining things
-Different methods in challenge 3
-Get a say in lessons
-Modelling in English writing lessons
-Enjoy learning about the geography of other countres
-Using art equipment we might not be able to at home
-Going on the field in PE
-Experiments in science
What could be better about teaching and learning at Sunnymede?
-More verbal feedback
-Teach subjects each week rather than blocking
-More modern history, such as Queen Elizabeth II
-More children to answer questions or read out work etc.
-More painting in art
-More class discussions rather than always recording in books

To help develop pupil voice and to find out what our classes think of our school, we have been conducting pupil voice in our school. The aim of this is to find out how we find our school and to help staff members make our school the best place it can be. We focused on teacher and learning at our school. Click the survey link below to see the survey we asked each of our classes.
After, we collated the information to help give us a snapshot view of our school.
November
Here at school council, we listen to everybody’s ideas, we try to make the school as best as it can be and we try to make our classes as happy as possible. Beginning 14th November, we participated as a school in parliament week. The two school councillors in each class led a few activities based on parliament and democracy. From our activities, we have learnt what a law is, the six stages of developing a law, what the house of commons and lords look like and how the government may decide things through debates. We enjoyed delivering these activities to our classes and we feel they learnt a lot from them.

Pupil council is back! We have finally been able to re-introduce pupil council back into our school to ensure pupils can have a fair say about their school life. Our 16 members were democratically elected into the council and we have been up and running for a few weeks now. So far, school council have introduced suggestion boxes into their classrooms to give pupils to chance to share their views. During our weekly meetings, we have been looking at suggestions and taking them forward with relevant members of staff. As a result of this, the active boards on the playground will be soon up and running to give the pupils more things to play with during break and lunch. In the coming weeks, we will be planning a project linked in with Parliament week, which is in November.
