Surrealism Painting

The main idea that guided my artwork was just enjoying the process and going wherever it leads me. I didn't really have a plan and just picked out colours that I liked and started putting them together. I think it can be difficult to understand abstract if you haven't created a piece yourself, which is absolutely true for me. I never got abstract but as I made this I found it was very freeing. It didn't really matter how good it looked or how well the colours went together, it just needed to feel right.

I used cut construction paper for my collage and acrylic paint for the actual painting. I chose acrylic for one reason only; it makes the colours look blank. Obviously it means layering a lot, but it wouldn't look good if I used something like coloured pencils or watercolour.

The whole time I was figuring my piece out. As I made the collage, I kept seeing more and more possibilities. If the paper was bigger, I don't think I would be able to stop. This is definitely outside of my comfort zone and is something I almost never do, so this was a big learning experience for me as an artist.
