Scratchboard Design

Abstract Tile Design

Sgraffito Clay with Gloss

4" x 5"

For this project it was really two steps of playing with negative space. The first step was we needed to sketch our idea out on scratch board to see the difference in the white and black space. After we were done with this it was time to etch out design into the sgraffito block. I chose to create this design in which I focused on all of the shapes touching each other. This was another project in which we needed to make the negative space intentional. Some of the shapes that form around the same area are formed this way so that they form special abstract shapes. I also chose to put different patterns within the shapes so not all of the background boxes would be the same.

The materials for this were rather simple. The medium that we used was clay. It was fun to finally work with clay because it was more textured than most of the surfaces we created before. On this tile we needed to put a top primer layer that was three layers deep and I used the green primer. I used the green primer because I thought it would give the work a better texture. The final step was to add a clear glossy layer. This layer preserved the work and made sure that it didn't scratch.

The process for this work was rather simple. I really did no research other than look up patterns that I thought would flow well inside of the shapes. I then created the shapes from what I saw fitting in the space and tried not to put too many of the same shape in the same area at once. For this we were able to get a practice. The practice that we did was scratching it out on scratch board in which we learned if we liked the design or not. The revision I made was very serious. I decided to start over from the original design because my lines were too deep since I didn't let the clay dry out in time. My only experiment for this project was to scratch out my design and figure out the best composition
