For this artist statement, I am choosing to write about my Negative Space Leaves drawing summative project. For this project, we had to find five leaves around the school. Once we found our five leaves we had to draw and arrange them in such a way that we had five negative spaces. Once we did this we had to turn that negative space into something. After I had finished drawing my leaves I noticed that it kind of looked like the continent of Asia. After I saw this in my drawing I decided that I was gonna turn it into a world map so I drew the rest of the continents and the major oceans.

The materials used in this project included printmaking paper, graphite pencils, and sharpie markers. I liked how we used printmaking paper because it was sturdy but also it helped because we were allowed to enhance our first draft of the leaves by making them bigger. The graphite pencils were used to create the original outlines. These things included the border, leaves, and the continents. The last material I used was sharpie markers. I used two types of sharpie markers. The thin point style was used to outline things like the continents and the leaves. The other type of sharpie I used was the thick pointed marker. I used this style to color in the continents and oceans. I liked using markers instead of colored pencils this time because it enhanced the color and really made the leaves stand out.

For this project, the only research I did was what the continents looked like and where the major oceans were located. I researched about the continents because I wanted this drawing to be pretty realistic. The only problem with that is that Asia is not in the middle of the globe. The only practice I did for this project was I created a rough draft and a final draft of the leaves because I adjusted the negative space a little bit. I wish I would have practiced the bubble letters because of the fact that they aren't all perfect. The only revision for this project was how I fixed how the negative space was arranged. One major experiment I did was I used markers to color instead of colored pencils. I think I like colored pencils better because they look cleaner but marker was a fine choice because it enhanced the color.
