Pinch Technique Summative

For this project, we were asked to create a sculpture using at least five pinch pots. This project was designed to show how much we had grown with the pinch technique and now it was time to challenge ourselves. For this project, I chose to construct a set of pool balls with a rack holding them together. For this project, the only tool that I used was a needle tool. With pinch pots, you are really only using your hand other than when you slip and score the clay to put it all together.

Like I said earlier the way that I made this project was, I grabbed two chunks of clay that were the same size. Next, I made both of them into pots and connected them using the needle tool along with slipping and scoring. After I did this I rolled out one coil and wrapped it around the pool balls. After this was done I made sure to let it dry and put it in the kiln for a bisque firing. For this project, I used the glazes SM - 51, SM - 1, C - 60, and PC - 49. I chose these color glazes because they represented my favorite balls in the game of pool. I like these balls because of the color variation that they are. The glaze on this project may look messy but I can promise you that it is intentional. What I wanted to represent by glazing these with a mixture of glazes on each ball is that they have been well used. What I wanted to show is how I hit them together so hard, now a little bit of the color has rubbed off on each ball. This is kind of comparable to how the cue ball gets blue residue on it from the chalk on the end of your stick. The last step was to throw my sculpture back in the kiln so that it can turn into its final form. For this project, I didn't really change it in any way because as you can see it is similar to my sketch.

The idea behind my project was that I wanted to construct something where you couldn't tell that it was made of pinch pots and that it just looked like one big sculpture. This relates to my life because I enjoy playing pool with my family and friends. The thing that I am most proud of is how the pool balls turned out. I think that they hold a nice sphere shape and I am proud of the way that they lined up. I also like how the glaze turned out because it demonstrated that these balls were used often because they have different color glazes on them which illustrates the idea that I wanted. One area that I wish I could have improved upon is the rack on the outside of the project. I wish that I could have made it more even in terms of thickness but time was running out so I was a little bit rushed. I also wish that I would have put a coil around one of the balls for a stripe. I wish I would have done that because the subject looks to plain with all solid colored balls.
