For this project, we were asked to make a sgraffito tile. This is a type of tile where you make a clay slab then underglaze it and carve the underglaze away. My inspiration for this project was halloween. For this project I used a roller to create the tile then I painted on underglaze that I would eventually carve away. This project was also really just an experiment to create a form using clay so that we felt what it was like to build things. I think that this also helped with the lidded jar project because if we wanted to we could create a slab and then rest our pots on top of the slab.

This project was a fairly quick process because we really didn't know how to make sculptures yet. For this process, we first needed to sketch out our ideas. Once we had our ideas down it was time to create our slab. The way that I created my slab was I used wooden dowels and a rolling pin so that I had an even height throughout my project. After I had my slab done I waited a little bit and put on underglaze. Once the underglaze was on, I carved my design into my tile. After this process was done it went into the kiln for a bisque firing followed by another firing to cement the clear glaze on top of the tile. The glazes that I used for this project were V 383 for the underglaze followed by a coating of HF 10 glaze which is clear. For this project, I drifted away from my sketch a little bit. My sketch was intended to get me started but on the day that I carved, I was just in the Halloween spirit. From what you can see on the tile I think I represented Halloween well with a triangle shaped like a candy corn and a figure that looks like a tomb. To enrich this idea I put an orange glaze on the tile.

My project was inspired by Halloween. I really just wanted to create something that would show my love for Halloween. This relates to my life because I love Halloween and this represents that because of the colors and the design. The thing that I am most proud of is how crisp the lines came out. One thing that you will notice about the lines on my stamp is how they are not so crisp but these lines are very distinct. I think that this project was also remarkable because I freehanded all of this which I am not great at. One way that I wish that I could improve my work getting rid of some of the lines that you can see when I carved. This frustrates me because if I blended them away I think that it would make my lines stand out more and then the figures would stand out more and be better represented.
