Sarah Hoskins

Birth Year: Not sure

Place of birth: She's based in Kentucky

Education: Columbia College in Chicago

Interesting fact: Her photographs have been included in over 100 exhibits.

About them:

Vladimir Rys as mentioned in the previous text box, found a passion behind photography when he was 15. One of the things that inspired him was All those evenings in the dark that he spent. Helped fuel his inspiration to continue on in photography. He loved the way of classic photography and the process of it.

Sarah Hoskins, seems to get inspiration by the troubles of our nation. She seems to be inspired by the problems our minorities face in their daily lives. Even though I haven’t seen her directly mention this in her portfolio. It seems she gets some inspiration to show the struggle of people in America and she focuses some of her time on the minorities.

Compare and Contrast:

Compositionally: Rys has a lot more shots of people in motion because of the difference in their categories. (Rys being a sports photographer and Hoskins being a documentary photographer). Hoskins are more of close ups on people and trying to capture as much of their facial expressions as possible while Rys is more of a body language photographer.

In the case of the subject: Rys's subjects shown in his work are a lot of famous athletes, specifically soccer and some formula 1 racers. When it comes to his sports page he has a lot of soccer photos and a mix of some others and they all have the commonality of showing either a high or a low in a photo. What intrigues me about the photos that I don’t have as much of a clue about is whether or not the athlete in the photo is crying tears of sadness or joy. Hoskins is more of the struggles of America, women and people of color within the United states.

While Rys is more of a sports photographer, he documents sports while she documents life in general.

When it comes to theme: they both cover different genres so they will have differences in theme. For Rys he seemed to be doing the ups and downs of sporting events and the emotions that athletes go through. He is also seemingly showing the love of the game. He seems like he’s doing it because it is genuinely fun while Hoskins has more of deeper purpose behind hers it feels. For Hoskins hers seemed like the problems within our society whether it’s about racism or being broad with showing shattered glass with the word America behind it. Which can be taken in many different ways.

Similarities:

Their themes: Both have black and white photos mixed into their main subjects. They also like to do people and their expressions even though in some cases the expressions being seen are different.

Both of their most popular subjects seem to have a mix of black and white, along with some straight-on angles of people in motion and out of motion. In Rys work he has a lot more action shots and less black and white photos probably because he is a sports photographer. But if you go outside of his sports photography work he has a decent amount of black and white photos in portraits.

However one thing they both play off is body language and facial expressions, with the good and the bad moments.

There commonalities in their subjects is: their subjects are: usually of people, for both. They both have some black and white photos and they both have messages behind the pictures that come across. For Vladimir Rys it’s the fight of the game and for Sarah Hoskins it’s the fight for everyone and reminding people the struggle that goes on in the country and the world.

Artist Statement: These were just some of the pictures I thought I could put my own spin on. It was very hard for both of them because of their unique subjects and there style. I liked the photo of me swinging my baseball bat in my gear because it's the sport I love. I want to really become a good athlete and a pro, so people like Messi and Kobe Bryant and Mike Trout are all inspirations for me. That's why I also used the Messi photo as a inspiration photo.
