Artist Statement: The Main Idea that guided my work was trying to get all the 84 sections of color within this 12x15 inch paper while also creating a scenery for people to wonder about. This scenery happens to be a basketball court with 84 plus different sections of color, value, shape, and pattern that is going to represent people in a basketball stand. I wanted to incorporate one of my biggest passions in life which happens to be basketball. One of my favorite basketball players is Kobe Bryant who sadly passed away and I thought it would be good to honor him slightly in my work.
I used the canvas paper given and I started to sketch down my ideas and then from there planned how many sections I would need and how I could measure it to fit it. Of Course from there I gathered all my materials, and I started mixing paint and getting down the section, soon I was able to finish off some rows of work and once I was done with the 84 sections I went on to get some light/medium tone brown to then lay on as my court. I added some black permanent markers for the lines of the court and then I wrote on the side an inspirational quote and an inspirational player who I appreciated. From there I let it dry and then posted it to artsonia.
I experimented for the main part and I did practice and revise several times but experimenting was a big element to this project. Though I didn’t know it I would have to experiment with new colors sometimes to then go over that color for not differentiating from the other. I then had to make sure I kept within the spaces I designed to get over 84 sections. I had to keep an idea of what I wanted with my original sketches from a previous assignment so that I could maybe get an idea of what I could incorporate near the end.
