Gelatin Prints

PLASTURED LEAF

Materials: Leaf, Paint, Gelatin Print

Size: 4x6 (inches)

Artist Statement: I was trying to get some color in there that would make the Gelatin Print subtle but yet eye grabbing. So I used blue and green, from there I tried a couple of different prints previous to this one. Then I started trying different materials around the house that I could stamp on and none of them gave the subtle effect that I was trying to go with. So I ultimately decided to use a leaf from one of the several plants around my house and it ended up looking rather wonky but I think it still looks good in the idea that it is like a snowflake it’s going to be different than others would look. In the sense of others using leaves for their gelatin prints.

I got the paint from school as me and my classmates would know and I also got the gelatin from school and so that's where my materials are from. We got a small paint roller the size of a whiteboard eraser and I also got a board to roll out my paint and get ready for the gelatin. From there I grabbed a few different things I wanted to try and before I even did that I got down a layer of the gelatin print by using a chopstick to make small lines on the gelatin. Anyways I used a couple of different things I thought could be printed, such as; a leaf which I ended up going with but I also used a postal stamp, a coin and I believe that was all but I ultimately decided to go with a leaf.

I researched what some other gelatin prints looked like and a lot of them were much bigger and were somewhat similar to what mine eventually came out to. I saw all the different patterns and got a little curious on how I could replicate some cool patterns. That’s when I started brainstorming and then testing my ideas and you can see where the process goes from there. I did practice a couple times with different things as I mentioned before such as a coin and a postal stamp and then a leaf. I revised the coin because I thought it could be mistaken for something else. I would say I experimented because I used several different materials that I wanted to use for a pattern within my gelatin print. In my head it’s somewhat a similar story even though in my head I was expecting it to look a little more like the picture but I still got what I imagined in some sense.
