Art History Inspired Project

Social side effects with media

Materials: Pencil, Eraser, and Ruler.

Size: 9x12(inches)

Inspired by: Jean-Michel Basquiat and Art Movement: Dada art.

Artist Statement: I believe the idea of not trying to have a realistic visual effect with this piece is pretty evident when you compare it to other pieces of work that I have done in the past. I would say if you also look at some of Jean-Michel Basquiat's work you will see where I got some of his signatures of work from. Same if you look up Dada art you should find that the meaning within this work is to make people aware of a subject that can be full of turmoil. This project relates to some of the feelings I have had when just getting onto social media and how it felt every time I got on and how it would make me think and act out towards others.

I used regular pencils and I used an eraser and a ruler and 9x12 paper. I tried to channel my inner emotions and how I felt about social media years ago and more specifically how it made me feel. I would also mention how it affected me with thoughts that I didn’t want to think of all the time when being on my phone. I wanted to warn people about the effects social media can have on someone’s brain and how it can make someone feel.

I sketched down ideas and before that of course I brainstormed ideas and I configured what I wanted to put on display to describe how social media can affect someone. I wanted to highlight some of the issues it brings for humanity or at least most people I have talked about it with. It went from the simple sketches to erasing and reconfiguring to getting down the final lines of the piece to getting down the final lines and making it feel the way it was supposed to be intended. My next steps could maybe be add other pieces into the mix like social media logos and so on and add some simple color to it.
