Sgraffito Process

Materials: Clay and Carving tools

Artist Statement: I was trying to bring the idea of how love can tower over others, that’s why the carving is in a tower shape to show that when you give love it can tower over other distractions. Kinda like it blocks out the bad intentions and brings the good intentions by towering over and putting itself in the spotlight. Wouldn’t you rather spread and give love than spread negativity by hating or jumping to bad conclusions, or be prejudice. It’s a question we should ask ourselves and I was hoping without being obvious that the tower would be a metaphor that would make people question what it’s meaning is. Kind of contradicting with the meaning and connection I have with the work because you should never doubt love, and compassion because someday someone will give you compassion and love. Even if it’s just another skyscraper in the sky, it should be towering love and compassion for one another.

I got down my ideas on a piece of paper first and then I began sketching on paper and trying different versions and from there I found the one I preferred and I thought would make the most sense. Once I had the sketch I then moved to scratchboard where I would fiddle around a little to try and see how I could maybe get lines in and make it simple but realistic and recognizable. It took me a little but what I came up with over time was a tower/skyscraper saying spread or give love whichever I felt I could fit and would work. I then transferred it to the clay and I got it down on the clay, once it was on the clay and I got it carved I sent it in to be fired.

My ideas in between the sketch to the finish product was to give this project some meaning and spread a message all in a few words. Something that would be understandable for anyone and that anyone could understand yet want to know the authors meaning for putting it out there. Kind of like a billboard and that’s where I got the idea to do a billboard on a skyscraper/tower. For which became the idea for my project and which I pursued and went through sketches and scratchboard over. I went through sketching and then scratchboard and then carving into a soon final product of clay for which would be soon fired to make it a soon final project.
