Artist Statement: Some of the ideas were trying to get the lines in the right manner to make it look realistic while also remembering that pure contour doesn’t involve shading. I had to really focus on my hand in the pure contour hand drawing, I had to focus on the lines that gave detail to my hand so that my pure contour hand drawing would look like my hand and it wouldn’t look like a bunch of random scribbles connected to a hand. In the pure contour drawing of a shoe I had to do the same thing. I tried to find defining lines that made the shoe look realistic and almost 3d I had to focus on every line on my shoes for each of the 3 views of the shoe I did. This project was given to me for foundations of art and I really think it helped me advance my knowledge in art as do many of the projects I have done. This project relates to my life in the fact that I used my hand for the pure contour drawing and I had to use my shoe in the pure contour drawing of a shoe.

For this project, I used graphite pencils such as 2h and a 2b to get the lines down for the pure contour piece I also used an eraser which I ended up using quite a bit in this project due to the times I had trouble with making the 3 views of a shoe. I used these tools to help bring it all together from when I started and I used the 2h pencil to get the basic sketch lines to go to the 2b to get some final lines in. Then of course erasing when needed to make sure the lines look detailed.

I started with getting down the sketch and taking a long look at what I was drawing for both the pure contour hand drawing and the 3 views of a shoe pure contour drawing. I wanted to make sure I knew which angle I was drawing each of these at and which one I could get the most detail out of. For the shoes I didn’t really have a choice of the angles but I still needed to decide which lines were going to be started first to get a base for the drawing that I could build off of. I went from there and I drew and drew and drew until it looked the way I was hoping I also watched some extra videos to maybe give some ideas on how I could draw some of these lines. It went from the scribbly lines of the sketch to being more defined and having more deep weighted lines which I think may have needed some more deepness to the lines in order to make the shoe pop out more in each view but for the hand I think I drew that pretty well. My next steps would be to add more little lines to both the hand drawing and the shoe drawings. I think as well that if maybe I could add some of the stitching to the shoe drawings even though that was not required.
