A Bouquet Of Animals

9" x 12"

4B & B graphite pencils, Tortillion, Rubber eraser.

The main idea that led me to this drawing is the prompt I was given. This prompt was "draw a flower with tentacles and a snout." This sprouted the idea of having a bouquet of flowers with the tentacles being a part of the bouquet as flowers, and the snout almost being the bow to tie that aspect to it. This drawing is a representation of how I take a prompt and twist it to fit my art style and make it my own.

The main materials used in this art piece were Graphite pencils and a tortillion. The B graphite pencil was used to create my sketches and first ideas. After I had my idea down and finalized it, I went in with the 4B pencil for the shading and darker tones to add different light features and to mess around with shading. Finally, the Tortillion was used to blend out the darker lines and shade in the centers of the flowers. The eraser was used for correcting any extra lines.

When beginning this drawing, I needed an idea. When I saw my prompt I knew I could draw a bouquet of flowers, but adding in a snout and tentacles would be more difficult. When I think tentacles I think octopus so I decided to use the tentacles as parts of the bouquet, like big leaves almost. As for the snout, I used an image from the link below as a reference and decided to make the snout the bow on the bouquet. For the shading and texturing, I struggled a little bit at first. This was when I remembered my prior knowledge of shading with a tortillion. When I was in eighth grade I spent a week learning to shade and add texture and dimension to my artwork. I went home and dug out my old sketches and studied the technique I used to create them. This helped me to mess around with the shaded features of this piece and to finally call this a finished piece.
