The Printing Process

Carved Linoleum block, Thick point Sharpies, black and green ink, ink paper, piece of a map, purple and red colored pencils, black ballpoint pen, presser, ink roller, palette knife, and a metal surface.

For these pieces, I wanted to show my knowledge of printmaking in different styles while also showing how I can sufficiently carve a linoleum block to then use as my own stencil for my printmaking. I feel as though I was able to demonstrate this properly, and I am very happy with my four final prints and impressed at the lack of extra prints I had to make to get the results I wanted.

To create my linoleum stencil, I first had to take my linoleum block and carve it with my design until it was completely carved out, and wouldn't leave any weird ink splotches on my paper. Then it was time to start printing. I picked out all my canvases and then started to roll out my ink into a nice thick layer on my roller. Next, I applied it to my linoleum block, and stamped it onto my paper, creating a stamp. I did this over and over again with different techniques until I finally got my four perfect prints, and could call this a finished product.

There was a lot of learning involved in these pieces. I had to learn how to carve linoleum blocks and turn them into stamps, and I also needed to learn how to create artworks and use my linoleum blocks to create different designs without a messy border or outline. For these pieces, it was very difficult in the beginning to get a good final product, but after many prints, I was finally able to get the hang of it and call this a finished piece.
