Realistic Self Portrait
11" x 14"
HB, B, 2B, 4B, and 6B graphite pencils, on pastel paper.
For each piece, I wanted to demonstrate my knowledge of shading and graphite contrast through a value strip to start, and a final self-portrait. I feel as though both pieces demonstrated my shading skills, along with providing new skills when it comes to making self-portraits.
For each piece, I stuck with the basic art materials. For the segmented value strip, I used a variety of graphite pencils to get the proper shade for every square, a yellow marker for the lamp post, and a thin point, and a thick sharpie to color in all the black spaces. For the realistic self-portrait, I used even simpler materials, using only a variety of graphite sharpies.
For these pieces, there was no research done. For the segmented value strip, I used an already made, shaded value strip to compare to my art piece to make sure it was properly demonstrating value. Whereas for my self-portrait I used a gridded photo of myself as a reference, and sketched lightly, so I knew my shading locations would be correct. After many revisements I finally can call my self-portrait finished.
