Blue Glaucus Sketch

A Unique Land to Sea Creature

~12" X ~3"

black and blue duck tape, newspaper, 22 gage wire, needle nose pliers, diagonal cutting pliers, thick black sharpie, blue construction paper, masking tape, Elmer's glue, and gem stickers.

For this piece, I wanted to demonstrate initially how I could create a realistic sea creature called a Blue Glaucus, made with recycled and reused material found around the art room, but eventually was taken in a different direction, and wanted to add a cuter element and different animals to make it a more unique and never seen before creature. I feel as though even with the change of design and the childish look, I love the final piece as it reminds me of the crazy creatures I would draw as a kid, and I was able to properly demonstrate how you can create interesting things with just a few recycled and misplaced materials.

To create this creature, I started by sketching out a life-sized version of what initially wanted my animal to look like, and then began shaping the body with crumpled-up newspaper and using masking tape to keep it all together. then I began by sketching out where I wanted my middle section to be and used cut-up construction paper and Elmer's glue to create the middle part of the body. Once I got to this part, I saw a lizard body and wanted to take my piece in a different direction. I scratched the initial tentacles and used blue and black duck tape to finish the body. I drew out cute little eyes and a mouth for the creature, and added some adorable gem stickers I found with the duck tape. I glued everything down and added my bee antennas and then it was finished.

to create this final piece, it was a lot of trial and error. I had to do a little reseaching on what a Blue Glaucus was to figure out what the best way to create it was, and then most of this project was about experimenting with different materials, and when I didn't like my initial design, I decided to scratch the Blue Glaucus, and add different elements of other animals to it, to create a new animal as we all remember doing when we were younger. overall, there was very little research done with this piece, but I am happy with the childish results.
