Mocha Scratches

8 1/2" x 11"

scratchboard paper, wooden dowel, glue stick, HB graphite pencil, Photo for reference, and scratching tools.

For this piece I wanted to show how I can make a realistic portrait of my dog using a new material that I had never heard of until this unit, scratchboard. I feel as though using the tools and skills I had developed when first learning and from the demonstration, and then applying them to a realistic portrait, was very difficult, and I'm not very proud of the finished product, but I'm happy I got it done.

To make this drawing of Mocha, I started off with a sketch with my HB graphite pencil, sketching out every detail so I was confident in my sketch. then I went in with my small tip scratchboard tool and scratched the outline, and then went in with my multi-bristle scratchboard tool, and added the finer details and scratches. then I brushed off all the extra material that was collected and called it a finished piece.

There was not a lot of research done to create this piece, but there was a lot of learning and developing of new skills. I first had to start with a demonstration by my art teacher, then I took those skills and applied them to my value strip. Then I needed to look up a video of how to detail scratchboard to make it realistic so that I felt confident in myself before I began my final piece. In the end, I'm not happy with the finished product and would do it again but much differently if I could.
