Art History Inspired Project

The Biggest Garden

~6" x ~5"

Aluminum foil, modge podge, paint brush, and sculpting clay.

For this piece, I wanted to show my favorite style of art through clay and color. I feel as though I demonstrated my skills when it comes to clay and color choice, and how I am able to develop new skills while trying new techniques such as playing with dimension and size variation.

To make this piece, I started by making my base out of aluminum foil and making sure it was the size and shape I wanted. Then I began making my flowers. This is when I used lots of different shapes and layered them in varying ways to create different flowers and nature aspects. Finally, I created my river and bridge and arranged them how they fit best on the base. This is when I cooked my piece in the oven at 275 degrees for 20 minutes so it would set, and then modge podged my river for an extra glossy look. This is how I finalized my piece.

For this piece, there was a lot of research performed. I first did as much research on fauvism and Henri Matisse's works and looked over the color palettes and why each color was chosen and what the most common themes were. Then I researched my artist of choice, in this case, my choice being Beatriz Milhazes. She loved to create flowers and use extreme and bold color palettes for her flowers, so I felt as though her artwork was the best inspiration to also incorporate fauvism and Henri Matisse into my piece. After this research and a sketch of my initial design, I revised and edited throughout the project and finally finished with this Piece!
