Shapes and Colors

9" x 12"

Assorted color acrylic paints, silver metallic paint pen, HB graphite pencil, assorted paint brushes, eraser, and acrylic paper.

For this piece I wanted to demonstrate how I could create a fun and colorful collage and then recreate it using acrylic paint and adding my own twists to it as I go along. I feel as though I did a good job of demonstrating how I can create something out of a certain material and then similarly recreate it with a different material, and i'd love to do it again if I was given the opportunity.

To create the collage, I used different colored paper and chopped them up into random square-like shapes and rearranged them onto the paper until I got a design I liked. Then I glued them to the paper and was finished. For the painting, it was a little more difficult. I needed to first sketch out the exact areas of my shapes and have the outline as close to the collage as possible. Then I needed to make the background by mixing paints until I got the right colors and then used that same process to create the other colors too. I didn't love some of the original colors so I changed them a little when I was mixing, before moving on to my paint pen. For the final touch I went in with a metallic silver paint pen and outlined all the shapes.

There was not a lot of research done for this piece. I knew I wanted to do something relating to colorful shapes and so I decided to play round with different square cut outs. After rearranging the shapes many times, I finally found I style that I liked and was happy with. There was a lot of revision with my paint colors, as whenever I was mixing them I would change the shade or tint because I wouldn't like the original color as much. I also decided to add some silver and change up the outline so my shapes would stand out more. Other than these minor changes I made, there was not much revising or editing throughout the process of these pieces.
