coloured pencil, charcoal

When planning the design for this assignment, I wasn't sure what to do to draw attention to my poster. I settled on this idea because I think it's eye catching and kind of funny while still giving the intended message. I struggled to come up with a good slogan, and then I struggled to find a way to draw a recognizable but still simple dinosaur skull. I am happy with how it came out overall I think. I do think it gets the intended message across in a way that makes you think about it.

I was originally going to use all charcoal but I don't think it would have looked nearly as interesting, so I settled on coloured pencil as well as the charcoal on the skull. I also used a pen for the writing to make sure it would pop out enough to read comfortably. I added the meteor kind of last minute because the sky being a plain blue was pretty boring to look at, and since everyone knows the story about the meteors and the dinosaurs I thought it would make sense so I used some pen and charcoal to make that pop out before adding the red yellow and orange pencil to the meteor itself and the area around it to draw attention to it. I like the texture the coloured pencil added to the ground as well.

I spent a lot of time researching both overly simple and overly complicated dinosaur skulls, and used that knowledge to draw my own mix of a few of those designs. I even looked at actual museum images of T-Rex skulls. I also drew a couple on a seperate piece of paper in varying levels of detail to make sure I liked my design before committing to it and adding it to the final poster. I tested a lot of designs, and even restarted the entire poster once because I decided I didn't like the look of the other skull I had drawn, and then I started this one instead and I much prefer the way this one turned out. I think it fits with the poster really well. I went through a similar process with the meteor testing designs on another piece of paper, but not to the same extent. I settled pretty quickly on that.
