Extended Blind Contour

Extended Blind Contour

sharpie, highlighter, graphite, coloured pen, bristol board

9 in x 12 in

I started with three separate blind contour drawings layered over one another with the paper oriented in a different direction each time: my hand, myself, and my tablemate. This was done in a very fine sharpie pen. Once that was done I really didn't know where to go with it and I sat working on other things with it sitting next to me in study hall for about an hour before actually starting back on working on it. I wanted to convey the randomness of the drawing as it started in the final piece because I didn't really see any one thing popping out to me as "something" that the sharpie lines looked like.

I used a super fine point black sharpie for the original lines on a sheet of smooth bristol board. From there I used a graphite pencil for the grey shaded area, and I rotated through various highlighters and coloured pens for the more brightly coloured sections. I focused more on filling in each section in a somewhat interesting way while keeping uniform colour instead of really trying to make it look like something specific.

The blind contour part we did in class was probably the easier part for me. I struggled a lot with deciding what I actually wanted the final piece to look like. I remember having a similar struggle with the same project last year too. My original plan after finishing the contour was to use just add graphite shading and leave it at that, but once I got started with that section I decided I prefer a more uniform look with the graphite in this case so I just filled in that entire section. Then was the issue of the rest of the drawing. I started that part with plans to only use a few different colours and use only pens but I decided to try adding highlighter to make some segments pop out a little more and I think I am happy overall with the way it came out.
