Modified Contour Drawings

9x12'

Artist Statement

For this project, we were each given an elastic band to hold between our fingers. We were then asked to draw what we saw, starting out lightly, adding as many small details, wrinkles, creases and scars etc. as we could. Once we were happy with our sketch we went over it once more to darken or lighten any lines, and cleaning up any sketchy lines. The materials I used was a pencil, my hand and a rubber band.

For my hand drawing I used line and texture. Through the use of thin, thick, dark and light lines throughout the drawing, I was able to make fine details, curves, patterns, and shapes in my hand, nails, and my rings. I also used texture by adding wrinkles and indents.

I have never been good at sketching body parts, so I am surprised and proud that my drawing came out somewhat realistic, and I was able to include smaller details like my fingernails and rings to help bring the drawing together. If I could go back, I would add more wrinkles and curves throughout my palm and my wrist. Overall, this small project really helped to improve upon "seeing" drawing exercises that we have been doing in class.
