Final Reflection:
I am most proud of the Valentine’s Day-themed mugs I created for the soft slab project. The assignment challenged me to construct a cohesive set of functional mugs using the soft slab method, which allowed for creativity in shaping and decorating each piece. The wavy rim detail and red-and-pink floral, heart, and cherry designs tied the set together, showcasing unity and pattern through the color palette and shapes. This project taught me to balance precision with creativity. While I focused on making the pieces functional, with sturdy handles and smooth interiors, I also prioritized aesthetic appeal, refining the placement of decorative elements. However, there are areas I’d like to improve. For instance, adding an extra layer of paint so there weren't , uneven or blotchy areas where the white of the clay was coming through, as well as applying an overglaze would provide a polished, glossy finish.
Taking this class has significantly changed how I think about ceramics. Before, I saw ceramics mainly as functional objects, like plates or mugs, but now I realize how much artistic thought, technical skill, and creativity go into each piece. On a personal level, this class has also taught me that ceramics is as much about the process as it is about the finished product. I’ve learned to embrace imperfections and see them as part of the piece’s character, making me more open to experimentation and less afraid of making mistakes. Taking this class also taught me about the importance of patience. The process of working with clay requires time, sometimes multiple classes or staying after school, and care to avoid mistakes, cracks uneven shapes or failed projects.
The best thing about this class was the freedom to be creative while exploring different methods and styles, especially with the artist and historical inspired projects, and learning different techniques like the slab, coil, pinching, etc. The worst thing about the class was managing time effectively for certain projects. Sometimes, I felt rushed to meet deadlines, which made it harder to perfect small details or fully experiment with new techniques. As a result I was unable to to finish my final project, and add finishing touches or overglaze to some of my other pieces, which I will hopefully find time to finish next semester.
