Abstract Shoe Drawing

Summative ~ 16x18'

Artist Statement

For this project, we were asked to draw line drawings of different angles of our shoe. This included a top, side, and front view. Afterward, we were given a piece of paper, which we divided into three sections, as well as a viewfinder to zoom in and draw an interesting part of our shoe. After zooming three different times, we had the option to choose one of the sections to draw on a 12"x 18" piece of paper as a base for the final assessment. For this project, I began with a light outline in pencil, went over it in a darker red, then used yellow, orange and pink colored pencils to color my abstract drawing of mountains and the sun.

In my artwork, I tried to include the elements of art to create the principles of design. The most obvious one would be color, which created emphasis, unity, and contrast against the lighter sun. I wanted to use bright, warm colors so it would pop. I also used line to create pattern and shape, and finally, I believe there is also a sense of balance, both sides figuratively weigh the same.

Overall, I really enjoy abstract art and have learned from this project, and other work in the past that I am most drawn to using bold or loud colors, almost like pop art. Although this project turned out decent, there were a few challenges I faced in the process. I had started on a separate first draft of this summative but sadly ended up spilling the water from my watercolors on my paper. Luckily, I had an extra piece and hadn't gotten too far but I was still short on time. I decided to do a simple abstract drawing and chose a few basic colors to work with. I am proud that I expiremented with pencil rather than my usual paint palate, even though it did not come out as smooth and saturated as I had hoped. I am also proud that I did not give up, and instead took this minor conflict as an opportunity to restart and make something even better.
