Artist Statement

To prepare ourselves for the color design project, we were given canvas paper that we sectioned off into two sets of 7 boxes to create a simple value scale using a primary and secondary color of our choice. We practiced painting with neat brush strokes all while experimenting with different shades and tints of our chosen colors. For my primary color, I chose blue, and for my secondary, I mixed two primary colors (blue and yellow) together to create green. Once we felt comfortable with the new materials, we were tasked with creating a thumbnail drawing for a final project where we would incorporate primary, secondary, and tertiary colors into one art piece. We were required to include all 84 colors (three tints and three shades of each color). For this project the materials I used were acrylic paint, brushes, water, pallets/palette knives.

In this project I incorporated many of the elements of art and principles of design. Through my use of a variety of different values of the warm colors in the sky, I believe they helped to create contrast and emphasis around the cool colored earth. I also used line and shape to create pattern and balance throughout the piece, mostly seen in the sky and bottom of the artwork. I attempted to create movement in my artwork, where the green patterns in the ocean would draw your eyes back to the earth and background. Finally, I believe there is a sense of unity in my artwork through my seperation of the cool colors and warm colors.

I have never been the best with paint, nor do I have the patience to keep reapplying layers and layers so no canvas would show through, but I powered through and believe everything was mostly applied neatly and evenly. One thing that I love about this piece is the hidden message and inspiration behind it. I have always been passionate about taking charge and speaking up to save our planet and our oceans from climate disruption, so in my artwork, I attempted to make it look as if the color was bleeding out of the earth. After I finished applying all of my cool colors, I struggled with finding enough space to fit most of the warm colors as well. I was able to overcome this struggle my simply adding more designs on top of the sun rays shining around earth, and ended up liking how it looked in the end. It would have taken a bit of time to fix, but I do wish I spent a little more time going along the borders of each object and pattern when I transitioned to a different color so the canvas would not show through in those areas. Overall, I am proud with how this project came out and would like to continue practicing with paint in the future.
