Sustained Investigation #13

Artist Statement:

For this project, I decided to take images of uprooted trees along the coastline. Human impact, notably through the emission of greenhouse gases and coastal development, is exacerbating the rise in sea levels. As sea levels rise, coastal erosion intensifies, leading to the loss of land and habitats. Additionally, it results in the uprooting of trees and vegetation along beaches, disrupting vital ecosystems and exacerbating the impacts of storms and high tides. I saw this tree walking Sullivans Island beach in South Carolina during the day, and decided to come back at sunset to capture an image of it, with the beauty of nature in the vibrant colors of the sunset to contrast with the destruction caused by climate change.

For this project, I did not have my camera with me so I used my iPhone, as well as snap seed editing app to edit the photo.

I went through a few processes while taking this photo. I took various photos at different angles, and close ups of the roots, as well as images of my parents standing next to the tree to show scale and perspective. Afterward, I downloaded the snap seed app on my phone to ply around with the contrast to make the colors of the sunset more saturated, and the tree to stand out against the sky.
