Artist Statement:
For this project, we were asked to create a set of functional mugs/tumblers that are unified through both form and design, although they did not have to be exactly identical. We used the soft slab method to construct the pieces, which allows the flexibility to shape each mug in a unique but cohesive way. Two of the four mugs were required to have handles. I wanted my jars to reflect a valentines day theme.
To construct these jars, I began by measuring the clay, rolling it around a plastic jar, which joined together with slip using the scratch-and-score technique to create a sphere. I applied the same scratch-and-score method for adding a bottom and handles, measured and cut the tops of the jars so they were even and then went in with my smoother tool to smooth everything out. I then created a wavy pattern on the rims of the cup. On the cups, I painted red and pink floral, heart, and cherry designs. I painted the bottoms of two of the jar handles, as well as the interior red as well.
Overall, I am proud of how these jars came out. I think they reflect unity and pattern through the shapes and color palette that was the basis of this project. One thing I would change, is potentially adding a fourth coating of paint, so that it looked even and as blotchy. I also would use an overglazw to make them glossy.
