For this project, I decided to critique my prompt to include not only the negatives but also the ways in which humans have impacted the environment in a positive way. Wind turbines are a sustainable alternative to traditional energy sources because they harness the power of wind, a renewable resource, to generate electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, so I decided to make that the focus of this project.
I decided to use gouache for this project. I used yellow, orange, and red-orange for the sunset. For the trees and wind turbine, I used black. I also went in with light yellow to bring out highlights and add a sun for detail.
I went through a few different processes while creating this piece. I had to restart with the background multiple times, because I could not get the colors to transition quite how I wanted them. I found that I was either adding too much water to the gouache, or not enough, leaving some areas very saturated, and some very opaque, making it difficult to blend into an ombré look. I didn’t want to ruin my project by adding too many layers of paint, so I decided to add clouds over the areas that were streaky or uneven. I opted to make the wind turbine stand out by deviating from its traditional white color, opting instead for black to create contrast.
