Artist Statement:
For this project, we had to create a vessel/form, functional or not that combines at least 5 pinch pots. They are required to be attached to each other somehow, and can be any size. For this project, I decided to create the phases of the moon. I wanted my form to be relatively flat, but still functiional as a tray for my jewelry.
For this project, I began by creating a circular dish for the full moon. I punched until I got my desired thickness and size, and pinched the sides to my dish. I then went in and smoothed the clay so there were no dents or scratches. Next, I made a half-moon shapes on either side of the full moon. Finally, I made two crescent moons, which gave the whole piece a sense of unity and balance. I attached them using the scratch-and-slip method. I used a deep blue glaze on top.
I went through a few different processes while creating this piece. Because this project was so fragile, I ended up placing it on a thick clay base, and carving around it, to hopefully help it stay together in the kiln. Despite my efforts, it still broke in one area, however, it was a clean break and I was fortunately able to glue it back together. Overall, I am very happy with how this project came out.
