All Hands on Deck

Wood block, wood burning, colored pencil

Artist Statement:

For this project, I decided to create hands planting a sapling to represent the ways in which humans can positively impact the environment. Planting trees is crucial for a healthier planet because they absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, helping to mitigate climate change. Additionally, trees provide oxygen, improve air quality, and support biodiversity, contributing to the overall health of ecosystems and human well-being.

For this project, I decided to a wood block and wood burning to incorporate natural/sustainable materials. I also used green and blue colored pencil for selective color, and add a softer look to the hands holding the plant.

I went through a few processes while creating this piece. I began by taking various photographs of my hands in different positions until I found the one I liked. I then used the photo as a reference and sketched it onto the wood block. Finally I traced the lines with the wood burning tool, going over some areas, or pressing lighlty in other areas to add variation of lines. I also expirimented with selective color to make the tree stand out, and emphasize the hands.
