Reflection:
Overarching Inquiry Question
so far my insquiry question is “how can I demonstrate the harmful human impact on the environment” however, I might tweak it to fit my projects as they develop.
Which SI project do you feel has been your most successful?
In this year's Advanced Art and Design, my most successful Studio Inquiry project was #6, focusing on my inquiry theme of "negative human impact on the environment." I honed in on a specific aspect of climate change, and what made this project stand out was my adept synthesis of materials. By employing charcoal and strategically burning the edges of the paper, I enhanced the impact of the final piece.
Which SI project do you feel has been your least successful?
I think my least successful project is my first one. Although it follows my theme, how I saw this idea in my mind didn’t really translate to how I wanted it on paper. My colors were very dull, and I needed to push my contrast, which made it less impactful.
What have you struggled with the most so far with your SI? How can you problem-solve the issues you've faced?
This year, I have struggled most with time management. For all my work, I used very detailed sketches and outlines, and never anticipated how long it might take me to actually paint or color the piece. This lead me to feel extremely rushed the night before to meet the deadline, and some of my work wouldn't, end up coming out the way I wanted. I think I can problem solve these issues by finding time during advisory and after school each day to prioritize my art work instead of procrastinating until the night before.
Another issue I have faced was coming up with ideas. I feel the need to have unique "never have been done before" ideas that are too complex and I know will take me a long time, and I end up having to again, rush through my projects. To fix this I need to shift my focus from pursuing exclusively groundbreaking and complex ideas to exploring a balance between creativity and feasibility. Embracing more manageable concepts, and tostering a habit of brainstorming and jotting down ideas regularly, help generate inspiration to draw from when working on projects.
What materials do you think you should still explore with your SI?
For an art sustained investigation focused on climate change, it is essential to consider materials that align with the theme and convey a meaningful message. Exploring eco-friendly and sustainable materials can enhance the conceptual integrity of my artwork. I want to consider experimenting with recycled materials, such as reclaimed wood, paper, or plastics, to symbolize the importance of waste reduction and resource conservation. I also wanted to explore more with different media I am unfamiliar with such as oil pastels and charcoal. I wanted to experiment on different surfaces as well. like wood burning.
How is your work developing
I wouldn’t say that that my theme is being developed throughout my work. A common thread I’ve been focusing on throughout all of my artwork is sadness. The messaging is quiet, evident in the floating, solace, loneliness , however, as mentioned in my peer feedback, think I need to focus on how each piece will influence and connect to the next so the theme feels less sporadic.
After reading through the peer feedback, what are the major trends/takeaways?
After looking at my peer feedback, I am going to continue pushing my contrast throughout my work, and maybe go back and fix my first project. I also think I should experiment with different textures and materials that relate back to my subject like I did in SI #6.
