Negative Space Leaves

Negative Space Leaves:

  • The purpose of this project was to focus on the space around an object, in this case leaves, instead of focusing on the positive space. Then we had to fill in the negative space only. We collected leaves and organized them in any way we wanted then drew the negative space around them. I used a 4h graphite pencil to sketch the leaves, then sharpie to outline it, then colored pencil to add color and pattern to the negative space.
  • I wanted there to be quite a few overlaps in the arrangement to show a lot of negative space.
  • First I drew a 1/2 inch border then divided the paper into quadrants and the paper that had the actual leaves into four quadrants so I could get a better Idea of where each leaf should go. Then I drew the leaves and erased the lines where overlap occurred, as well as outlined the leaves with sharpie. Then taking inspiration from zentangles I drew some patterns to fill in negative space. Also when it came to the background I wanted there to be a lot of color in pattern, however I would not draw the part that's colored in with blue.
  • This project really helped focus on the shape of the leaves and where overlapping occurred instead of what's on the inside.
