Pure contour and pattern
The setting for this piece is an abstract zoo. I used a range of animals; giraffes, elephants, lions turtles. The point of this project was to take everything we had learned from this year (pure contour, darkening coloring, abstract designs, different views, positive and negative space, overlapping) and apply it into one piece. For this project I used a really light pencil to sketch out my designs then darkened them with a B pencil. After that, I went back over the lines with a fine tip sharpie and then used colored pencil to add color and pattern. I wanted the animals that I did two of to overlap, except for the turtles because I wanted to enlarge my turtle and do one half and then I wanted the other turtle to fill up space in the middle.
To keep the pure contour we couldn't color in all of our animals, however I colored in the two biggest ones being my turtle and lion. After I outlined each animal/set of animals with colored pencil making sure the lines were bold and dark. Then, I did many different designs to fill in the negative space. I tried really hard to make my coloring bold, although on some of the patterns I wanted the effect of darker on the outside and lighter on the inside.
Originally, I was not going to add the turtles and I was going to use the lion, elephant, and giraffe to create an African theme/ pattern. However, I then wanted to fill more of my space so I decided to add the turtle in the middle as well as the half turtle that went off my boarder. I chose these animals because I really liked them, and I thought there was a lot I could do when it came to composition, overlapping, different views of the animals.
