Negative Space Leaves Drawing

I'm calling this project scattered flower because it is made up of multiple petals, so it shows that petals of a flower, just scattered. So it's not in the form of a flower. The setting of this artwork is based off of the negative space of leaves. This basically means that I created a background for the leaves without drawing the positive space, which would be the inside of the leaves. Instead you're basically seeing an outline. I chose to create the background like this because I thought it would really show the different range of color values, from dark to light. To complete this project I taped down leaves onto a separate piece of paper, and without tracing, I drew what I saw in the negative space. I created the negative space background with a full range of colors, using colored pencil.

Some techniques I used were pattern and rhythm. I showcased pattern in my artwork by using petals all throughout the drawing. I used rhythm by being repetitive with the drawing. This is because I stuck with that one pattern to create rhythm throughout my artwork. While creating this artwork I paid close attention to shape and color. At first I wasn't going to stick with one color in each specific area, I was going to have the whole thing all different colors. I am glad I decided to stick with one color in most spaces just using them with different dark an light values. I wanted my artwork to be less colorful than some of my other pieces of artwork, so I decided to stick with one color in some areas, but the reason why I didn't do that all throughout my project is because I had already started, and I was going to work with my mistake. I like the way I was able to use this pattern to make a background for the negative space, and I really feel like it filled the background, so that there would be no white space.

The story behind this artwork is that since we were working with leaves, I thought I'd do petals because they look like leaves, and at that it would really make the leaves stand out. This project can relate to my own life because it shows that sometimes if you work around the main idea, you can still really bring something out. This is because, like with the leaves we only showed the outside, but somehow filling in the negative space was able to bring out the leaves, and their shape. To make my artwork stronger I probably would have either done the negative space all one color, or not have done the multiple colors on the right side of the project.
