I'm calling this project, What Sea Turtles are Really Made Of, because it shows how there is so much plastic in the ocean, and it's harming the sea life. The subject is a sculpture based off a sea turtle. I chose to create this specific work because I wanted to make a statement and bring awareness, informing people about this issue.
For materials, I used plastic bottles, plastic straws, and plastic bags. I used a variety of techniques and methods including: hot gluing and sculpting. While creating this work, I paid close attention to color by trying to find bottles off different colors for the shell. I wanted my artwork to look like it was made of plastic and I did that by using nothing but plastic.
I like the way the shell looks, and I am proud of how I was able to use a variety of different plastic materials. However, I struggled with making the head all out of straws. If I created another artwork like this I may make the arms more of the same size because I think they look a little uneven. My work shows that I learned how to make a sculpture out of plastic materials that I never used previous to this experience.
