Charcoal and ink

This project is a charcoal and ink drawing.. For this project we were required to incorporate both charcoal and ink into our drawings . For this project we used an image that we have took and drew grids to enlarge the drawing. The image had to be in black and white so that it would look the same when we enlarged it. I used white charcoal to draw highlights and black charcoal to draw the darker areas. I used ink when drawing ares that were all black. I choose a picture of my old dog because I felt that it was a good taken image and I wanted to draw him as a memory of him. Elements used in my artwork are lines and black and white color values. A principle that I used in my art was contrast because I just use blacks, whites, and grays. I used formal balance for this artwork when I used grids to enlarge it so that it would look proportional.

Techniques that are showcased in my artwork are shadows, different lightings, highlights, and values. I used highlights mostly on the back, which portrayed where the sun was hitting the back. I used darker areas to show where the sun wasn't reflecting and areas that were farther away. I used different lightings basically everywhere because thats how it looked in the photo. My art evolved because at first it didn't look like my dog, but as I drew in more squares on the grid, the drawing really started to come together. I changed the grass because it didn't look a lot like grass to start with.

The story behind this artwork is that I took the picture a few years ago when I was spending time with my dog and I remember it like it was yesterday, so it brings back a lot of memories. This project relates to my life because I had Bruno(the dog) for basically my whole childhood so when he died a few tears ago it was really hard for me when he died, so it brings back a lot of happy memories. To make this artwork stronger I would probably come up with a new technique on how to draw the grass because I still don't think that it looks very good.
