Sgraffito Clay Tile

I'm calling this project, floral because its a floral pattern. The subject is a circle clay tile based off a floral pattern. I choose to create this specific artwork because I really like floral patterns and I thought it would look really pretty on the clay. For material, I used sgraffito clay, tools to carve into the clay, and clay paint/glaze. I used a variety of techniques and methods including: drawing an outline on the clay and carving.

While creating this work, I paid close attention to space by making fine lines and taking my time. I wanted my artwork to look like floral you would see on wall paper and I did that by looking at many examples to get an idea of how i was going to create my own. To add interest to my composition, I used contrast by making sure I had about the same amount of carved as none carved space, so when it goes in the kiln the black and white spaces will look even.

I like the way my artwork resembles an old floral wallpaper and I am proud of how I was able to spend extra time out of school to work on my project. However, I struggled with doing exactly what it was like on my design paper because I couldn't draw a grid to make it proportional. If I created another artwork like this I may try to make some new flower designs/patterns. My work shows that I learned how to draw on scratchboard and carve on sgraffito clay.
