Below is a video compilation of the VA students' favourite works that they have made over this year.
The Literary Arts students have gone through the creation of short fiction, plays and poetry. Here are some of the works that the Literary Arts students have done this year!
An excerpt from "Light-Headed" by Dylan Low Shang Jie
And try they did. The next evening, he didn’t open his door like an idiot, but that wasn’t because he learned his lesson, but because the doorbell didn’t ring. A bolt of lightning struck his roof, shattering glass. His kidnapper had arrived - no bolt of lightning could have been targeted like that, avoiding his lightning rod.
Bobye quickly connected his hip bone to a nearby socket with some fraying wire and electrocuted himself. If he was going to die anyway, he might as well bring this kidnapping maniac down with him, before more people suffered. The metal’s growth accelerated, as his skin turned shiny, and his ribcage became steel.
Then the metal completely stopped growing. His face had a glassy feeling to it, but shook off the thought reserving reflection-checking for after his kidnapper was handled. His house shuddered. Bobye climbed to the attic and saw both a gaping hole in his roof and his kidnapper properly for the first time.
“Ah, how nice of you to join me.” an awfully familiar voice spoke. Gazing at his kidnapper, Bobye froze.
“D-doctor?”
His kidnapper gave no reply. The light from the Champs-Elysees lit up his silhouette. Then everything went dark. He was the only source of light in the whole city.
As the doctor stretched his arm towards him, Bobye instinctively dodged, shrieking as he fell off his roof. However, he felt nothing except a severe headache. His face was glass. Hands half-wire. Body metal. Glancing upward, seeing his doctor’s face from a different perspective, he immediately recognized a familiar set of facial hair…
Me and Me by Shravya Goel
(You can read the poem left to right, or the left side up to down first then the right side up to down)
Me and Me
Year 2007, seven, pink petite pretty blouse, 2020, twenty, dark, dull, shaded tee,
cotton candy, cartoon imprinted purple skirt, ripped black jeans and netted gloves,
skipping, dancing, prancing, felling gold heavy, grey bag and thick files stuffed,
silver button up princess glass shoes, faded and torn charcoal chunky boots,
sweet smile plastered to sweaty face, eyeliner stained tears dot her eyes,
happiness lines her cute chubby face, rubbing temples, stressfully she trudges,
dreams to be in cosmetic school, neat, blush and rouge making her stand out more,
whispers about wanting to grow old, dark crop top embodies ‘want to be a kid again’,
she looks into the future (forward), she looks into the past (back),
They spot each other from far,
she giggles loudly, she wipes her charcoal tears and smiles widely back,
sparks are exchanged,
time is turned forward and back,
they run and wrap around each other,
ever so blissfully.
An excerpt from "double-tap to like" by Foong Hana Mizoguchi
I sit inside the classroom, watching Misha and her buddies taking pictures under the sun outside. I’m feeling a little lighter after what I heard earlier. And I don’t feel like slapping Misha anymore. As I sit there, Oliver walks up to me. I immediately stop chewing my lips and check that they are not bleeding. He asks me why I’m not joining the girls. I ask him if he even knows me. He laughs and sits on the table in front of mine, running a hand over his buzzed hair. I start to see the similarities between him and Misha. Tall, slightly crooked nose. That’s about it, though.
“Science?” He jerks his head at my notes. I look away and nod. “Cool,” he continues. “I’m gonna fail.”
When I tell him he won’t, he laughs again and swings his legs, looking out of the window. For a moment, I am tempted to go outside and be girly with Misha’s gang. Then they start dancing to some pitchy girl-group song. I raise my eyebrows and take a sip from my water bottle.
“Do you…” Oliver starts and he turns to me slowly, but he falters when I meet his eyes. “Never mind,” he mutters and hops off. “Bye,” he adds, before walking away. Some kid standing outside slaps him on the back and they trot down the corridor, muttering to each other. I stare after him, confused. But I still can’t stop grinning.
First Flight by Alison Tay
Sandcastles by Zara Estrella Parveen
Sandcastles
Fingers
raked through
wet sand. Clumps of
grain pressed into shaped
plastic. “Hurry, flip it over a -nd remove the
mold.” Adorned with one-of-a-kind ivory above the ‘door’
and on the sides. My kingdom of sand. Stained
glass windows made of plastic. Carriages and gawk carved with unique motifs.
Knights in shining armor, saving the damsel in distress. Magical beans that grow
taller than the sky… reality crashes onto you,
dissolving your imagination back
into gritty grain
on a beach.
The disappointment of a young
child as they
run to the shade,
shielding
themselves from the
sizzling Sun. Alas, oceans
rise and empires
fall.
My fantastical
empire
of gold must return
to the sea.
The following is a rehearsal of short play titled Flying to the Sunset, performed by Allegra and Urmila, and filmed by Yih Xuan.
These are some of the pieces that the Music students in R6 have played!
Piece: Innocent (Laputa theme)
Composer: Joe Hisaishi
Name of performer: Natalie Lim
Instrument: Piano
Reason for picking piece: I really like Ghibli and this piece sounds nice :)
Piece: Fantasie (2nd mvn)
Composer: J.N.Hummel
Name of performer: Ethan Ong
Instrument: Viola
Reason for picking piece: I know it very well, so I can make it sound nice (it is already very nice on it's own :)
Piece: The Swan
Composer: Camille Saint-Saëns
Name of performer: Cadee Yeo
Instrument: Cello
Reason for picking the piece: ‘The Swan’ is a very famous cello solo piece with a calming and soothing melody which I really liked, so I decided to learn the piece and perform it.
Piece: Les Perles (The pearls)
Composer: Friedrich Burgmüller
Name of Performer: Rishab Vijayakumar
Instrument: Piano
Description: This piece paints the picture of smooth pearls rolling down different surfaces. When the playing gets louder, they are rolling down a slightly rougher surface, and when it gets softer, they are rolling down a smoother surface. Later on, the piece gets stronger, telling me that the pearls are now rolling down a steep surface, at a high speed, and as it gradually gets gentler and softer, the gradient of the slope is getting lower. The pearls finally come to a stop when the piece ends.
Piece: Oraju Pucchu
Composer: Saint Tyaagaraja ( one among the trinity of Carnatic music )
Name of Performer: Laya Mahesh
Instrument: Carnatic Violin
Reason for picking this piece: It is set to adi tala and kannadagowla raga... This is a splendid piece with detailed nuances, which is perfect to be played on the (carnatic) violin. This song is also one of my favourite compositions that I learnt this year.
This is a dance piece choreographed by the Dance students in R6!
- If The World Was Ending (JP Saxe and Julia Michaels)
- it fit the style of the dance.
- lyrical/contemporary
- those styles combines the techniques and steps we learnt from ballet and movement and improvisation individually.
