ELCT is a subject where we hone our essay-writing skills and expand our world knowledge. Below are three posters made by Claire, Ken You and Asher which describe the topics that we have covered during ELCT lessons!
In Literature lessons, we analyse and learn to appreciate poetry, prose, plays and other forms of literature. We have learnt to see and explore the literary devices and choices that writers use in the works around us. Below are the analyses by Hana, Shravya, Wan Lin and Gayle of the nursery rhymes Baa Baa Black Sheep and Row Row Row Your Boat, to showcase our learnings.
This year in History, we have gone through the past of Singapore before the 19th Century. We have learned how to infer ideas and facts from pictorial and written evidences. This video summarises our learnings in History, and features Allegra, Chyenne, Kate and Kristen.
In Geography this year, we learned about content on maps and rivers, and energy and water resource, as well as answering skills for different questions. Because of a really nice Geography teacher we had, Geography classes were very eventful. Alison, Alexis and Yue Tong have created a diagram on rivers which shows what we have learnt about it.
In Mathematics this year, our class has dabbled in topics ranging from algebra to area and perimeter. Math can sometimes be tough and confusing, and Urmila, Rishab, Zara, and Chu Qiao have put these feelings of frustration into a light-hearted comedy skit, showcasing the chaos of Mathematics.
We have covered numerous topics in Science, from chemical science to physics and biology. Our teacher, Ms Foo, has been funny and trendy, so Natalie, Chloe, Laya, Ethan and Yih Xuan have decided to create a list of (really bad) jokes and puns to combine our teacher and this subject.
Friendly Note
So today we’ll be covering 3 science topics worth of puns and...bad jokes, dad jokes :)
~ Jazz hands~
This isn’t PSLE or anything so you guys can uh… Have your temperature decrease from 37°C to 21°C
No you’d get hypothermia please don’t do that. Just...chill :)
Yes this won’t be the only pun I’m sorry.
Pun indicator: :)
Cells
Mitochondria break down food for the cell and helps provide it with energy. If you end up in prison it’s nice to be mitochondria so that you’re the powerhouse of the cell :)
Plants and animals are multicellular organisms; they are made of many cells. There are also unicellular organisms like the amiibo amoeba :).
(Nintendo pun for those who don’t know)^
Some cells reproduce through asexual reproduction, where only 1 parent is involved. The cell just divides and splits. No love in the air:(
~Hello darkness my old friend~
That’s all for cells! I guess we can… cell-abrate now. :)

Light
A light photon makes its way to a hotel and checks in. He’s asked if he needs help with his luggage.
He says ‘no thanks, I'm travelling light!’ :)
~Ba dum tss~
Colour
White light is made of 7 colours. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
The colours of the rainbow can be combined to form white light. Raindrops actually disperse white light in it due to refraction of light. This is also what happens in prisms.
Speaking of which, where does bad light end up?
In prism. :)
~Wheeze~
Atoms and molecules
First rule of thumb. Never trust atoms. They make up everything.
:)
Protons have a positive charge and electrons have a negative charge. Neutrons have a neutral charge.
If you order protons AND electrons we’ll send you neutrons free of charge :)
Periodic Table puns
Sodium was mad in a round, so it went Na
Oxygen went on a date with potassium. It went OK
But I thought oxygen was dating magnesium! OMG!
Actually oxygen first asked nitrogen out but he said NO
I thought oxygen had that double bond with the hydrogen twins!
NaBrO
Hey also, what kinda fish is made of 2 sodium atoms? 2 Na
~That’s all for today folks~
In Experiential Education this year, we had to maintain social distancing for the majority of our lessons. Therefore, we experimented with badminton, and Hana, Zara and Urmila have created a riveting trailer showcasing the sport.
Below are some showcases of the different Mother Tongues that the R6 students have studied this year!
Here is a paragraph in Chinese written by Chu Qiao (with English translation) describing her year in SOTA.
Dear parents, I am Zhao Chuqiao from Class R6 of the School Of The Arts. Next, I will share my experience of studying Chinese at the Art School this year. As SOTA is an art school, everyone is very creative and the lessons conducted by the teachers are very interesting. For example, the teacher would create a Quizlet game for us in class, where we would link Chinese words with its English translation. The whole class enjoyed playing the game and our Chinese improved a lot. Every time we finish a chapter in our textbook, our teacher would create a Kahoot game for us. The questions in the game are related to the contents of the chapter, and we have to finish the questions within a fixed amount of time. There are rankings in the game, and the speed and accuracy with which we answer questions affect our rankings. My classmates and I loved this game, and sometimes we even beg our teacher to create a Kahoot game for us to play. This game will give us a deeper understanding of the content of the chapters we have learned.
In primary school, we write our essays about the pictures, themes, or the given essay introduction. In secondary school, it is different. Our essays come in three formats: diary, email, and informal letter. It is easier for me to write in a diary format, so I always choose that format during the exam. In addition to essays, there is an oral examination, listening, and reading comprehension. Listening and reading comprehension are not difficult, but there is a huge difference between secondary school oral exams and primary school oral exams. The primary school oral exam involves reading and speaking about pictures, but the secondary school oral exam is merely answering questions related to the passage one has read. The examination in secondary school was not difficult, so I was always at the top of my class. Anyway, I like my secondary school life very much, and I hope next year will be as wonderful.
Below is a paragraph written in Malay by Zara Estrella, one of the only two Malay students in our year.
Hello parents, teachers and friends! My name is Zara Estrella Parveen and I am from the only Malay Year 1 class in SOTA . This year has been filled with various challenges that I would have never thought that I would be facing. Firstly,I definitely did not expect to be in a Malay class that comprises two students! I now prefer a smaller class because I feel that it helps make the learning feel more personal to the student which leads to better understanding of the topics taught. Despite the multiple pros of having a small class, the first few weeks were definitely awkward because it was so different than my bigger class from primary school. Thankfully, it didn’t take very long for me to bond with my classmate because we found out that we had a lot in common. Another challenge was COVID-19. Due to this, one project that I did did not go according to plan and I had to compromise a lot. This project was the storybook for children, and we quickly realised that we needed to scrap the idea of making a hardcover book and go digital. Even with the hurdles I faced, Malay is still my favourite subject. I personally would like to thank Cikgu Maslinda for being so patient with me and Aliyah from R5! I hope that she can be our teacher next year too. Thanks for reading!"
