In Literature, we learnt how to use literary devices to decipher a poem. Some of the poems we worked on are the Introduction to Poetry, The Trouble with Snowmen and Siren Song.
The first poem we worked on was the Introduction to Poetry. Introduction to Poetry was about the deep meanings behind each poem and how the poet (teacher) wanted the readers (students) to try and understand the poem instead of trying to force meaning out of the poem. This starting chapter allowed us to understand how important poems are in Literature.
It was a necessity to be able to remember and understand the meaning behind the devices.

Atwood conveys resentment in her poem, Siren Song, using imagery, diction, and irony. The lines ”out of this bird suit”, “squatting on this island” and “with these two feathery maniacs” depicts a strong sense of hatred. The words “bird suit” create imagery of a very eerie and strange picture. Imagery is also used when the persona is mocking her wings, loathing them and hence calls them a ‘bird suit’. The word ‘squatting’ creates more imagery of an unglamorous and uncomfortable position, hence heightening the persona’s distaste for her situation. The words ‘feathery maniacs’ conveying the ‘maniacs’ are actually ‘feathery’, and not human, not normal but just wearing a ‘suit’, like the persona. This is also diction. Additionally, it also creates an imagery of the feathers. The irony is used to portray deep resentment and disdain. Atwood depicts the persona can sing a song “that is irresistible” and describes the song as powerful. However, despite having such control, the persona “doesn’t enjoy it there”, deepening the sense of abomination. Hence, there is a strong theme of resentment and revulsion.
I chose this picture due to its similarities in emotion and wings but the woman in the picture is more human-like, compared to a siren. Similar to the poem, the visual text I chose has a large sense of negative emotions like unhappiness and resentment. Both the persona in the poem and the woman in the picture have distressed expressions and wings. As the wings in the photo are burning, an assumption can be made that there is hatred or resentment from the woman directed at the wings. The dark colour scheme also depicts the depressing mood of the poem, as it says “will you get me out of this bird suit”, hence conveying that she is trapped and thus sad. However, there is a woman in the picture, not a siren, which is less commonly depicted as beautiful.

Things I find similar about this picture (or any Ellen DeGeneres picture) with the poem.
1) Ellen DeGeneres seems to have a nice personality as she shows on her talk show and she puts on a facade of being a sweet and generous person. However, it is all just for show, and her actual personality is rude and mean.
2) The sirens have the head of beautiful woman, but the body of a bird, as shown in the poem from “will you get me out of this bird suit”. This shows that the sirens are deceiving sailors into thinking that they are beautiful damsels in distress that require help. However, once the sailors listen to their song, they “leap overboard in squadrons” and fall for the siren’s trick.
3) The story put under Ellen’s smiley face, shows her acts of being mean when off-camera, perfectly captures how she presents herself to the public versus how she actually is off-camera.
Personally, I find that lessons with Miss Pod allowed us to treasure the meaning of the poems we learnt and how we must analyse the poem properly to be able to fully understand it
This is an activity we did during HBL - our teacher wanted to check in with us and she did a little activity to check in on what we were doing during HBL.
As SOTA is an art school, teachers constantly integrate our art forms into our subjects. One example is our Creative Representation/Creative Book Report. We were given a list of books, from which we had to choose one that we had yet to read. We then had to read it and create either a new book cover, a miniature stage set, write a letter to a character in the book from the perspective of one, a comic strip, an original piece of music, or write a poem (or a series of poems). The example to the left is a miniature stage set done by one of our classmates.
