My role in St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School is to encourage young people to identify and develop their skills and strengths and understand the routes and pathways open to them. This in turn, allows them to make informed decisions from S2 subject choice time to senior phase options and beyond.
Foundation Apprenticeships
SCQF Level 6 (equivalent to a higher)
A foundation apprenticeship is an option to study during S5 or S6 at school. It provides students with time out of school to attend college and gain valuable industry work experience as part of the qualification. There are 12 different Foundation Apprenticeships to choose from that you can apply to study over 2 years starting in S5 or 1 year in S6. The foundation apprenticeship subjects are related to growth industries ( sectors which are showing an increase in the number of job vacancies) and include Civil Engineering, Engineering Systems, Mechanical Engineering, Social Services Health Care, Social Services Children and Young People, Accountancy, Business Skills, Financial Services, ICT software Development, Hardware and System Support, Creative and Digital Media, Food and Drink technologies, Scientific Technologies,

Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships
Post school pathways:
Modern Apprenticeships – learn on the job gaining skills, experience and qualifications while working directly in the industry.
Graduate Apprenticeships - gain full-time industry experience and a wage – while you get a degree. You’ll split your time between studying at university or college while you work.
Gradu8
South Lanarkshire Councils Gradu8 programme offers senior phase students (S4 – S6) the opportunity to study towards a vocational qualification.
The Gradu8 programme includes courses that have been identified as they provide an introduction to vocational areas where there continues to be progression opportunities and employment. The courses both give the young people an introduction to that area of work and support their attainment by providing an opportunity to complete a number of units at SCQF level 4 and 5. It will involve young people attending college 1 day per week.

Progression from these courses may include moving on to a Foundation Apprenticeship, further study at College, or on to employment or a Modern Apprenticeship.

Work Placements
Work placements are an important part of your career education. Not only will a work placement give you a taster of real life work, it will help develop key employability skills such as teamwork, problem solving, communication and time management. Pupils can arrange and take part in a flexible work placement from June of S3 – S6.

The Aspiring Professionals Programme
This programme offers; mentoring, skills sessions, university application support and work experience. This is suitable for students who have an interest in; Accountancy, Architecture, Banking & Finance, Biology & Chemistry, Business, Engineering & Physics, Law, Media & Communications, Medicine, Politics, Technology and an option for those who aren’t sure.
The eligibility criteria for our school is: FSM & 5 A/B at National 5 and/or Eligible for FSM at some point in high school. See Mrs McLean.
Apprenticeship Opportunity
As part of our commitment to the local community and our investment in the future of our company, we are looking to recruit a total of six modern apprentices in craft and technician disciplines.
The following criteria is required and applications should highlight any specific qualities or hobbies you have which are engineering or IT related and explain why you wish to pursue a career in this field.
Modern Apprentice Opportunity:
Candidates for Craft apprenticeship opportunities must have or expect to pass at least 4 National 5 grades at level C or better (or the equivalent). Subjects should include English, Maths and a science or technical subject.
Candidates for Technician apprenticeship opportunities must have or expect to pass at least 4 National 5 grades at level C or better. Plus 2 Higher grades, 1 of which should be either Maths, Science (preferably Physics) or a Technical subject. For IT role, 3 higher grades of which one should be either Higher Computing or Information Technology plus Higher Maths and English.
Your studies and on-the-job experience within our Apprenticeships will lead you to achieve status of one of the following 6 opportunities available once completed: Electrical Design Engineer, Test Technician, Fabricators x 2, Maintenance Fitter, and IT Support Technician.
