English

English is a subject which is critical to the development of the core skills which support learning and development across the curriculum: Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening.

In English we aim to engage all our S1-S3 pupils in a variety of literacy activities which support the curriculum and fulfil the requirements identified in key English and Literacy Benchmarks. We support them in the transition to National Qualifications and most of our pupils progress to a qualification at National 5 level, with a large proportion continuing to success at Higher level. We also see impressive numbers joining us for the highest level of study at Advanced Higher.

At BGE level, we encourage a love of reading and writing through the study of literary and non-fiction texts and we offer frequent opportunities for creative and functional writing. Our 10 minute regular reading for pleasure slot allows pupils to enjoy daily reading and access a wide range of texts from classroom libraries. Discussion, class and group, is a regular feature of lessons and helps to develop confidence and the ability to articulate ideas effectively, whilst listening to the views of others.

In the Senior Phase, core skills in literacy continue to be critical to success. Study towards National Qualifications is intensive and requires students to work towards success in three elements:

  • Portfolio of Writing

  • Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation

  • Critical Reading

There are many opportunities for extra-curricular experiences through creative writing competitions, The Rock and Read Book Club and as Literacy Leaders, as well as for budding journalists who can become part of the editorial group for The Oystercatcher magazine.
