At 8:15 Greek hosts and foreign guests set out in the morning by metro and arrived at the Acropolis metro station where they met the partner teachers. After the first chats and greetings we headed towards the “Propylaia”, the entrance of the Acropolis Hill. We walked along Dionysiou Areopagitou str, having nice neoclassical buildings on the left and the Dionysus theater and Odeon Herodis Atticus on the slope of the Acropolis Hill on the right. The weather was perfect, neither too hot nor cold. We formed our groups, three in number, and waited for our turn to enter. Greek pupils gave information about the place and the monuments of the archaeological site.
We visited the temple of Athena, the Parthenon and the little temple Erechtheion and felt the energy as if it was being emitted through centuries. Although the temples had been constructed during the 5th century BC, and they had been destroyed several times by conquerors, it was like preserving the glory and prosperity of that time. We had a view of all Athens, as we could see all around the Hill. We saw the Odeon of Herodus Atticus, which is preserved to a degree and concerts of special quality are held there.
At 10:30 we were down at the foot of the Acropolis Hill, and had a light snack and refreshment under the shade of the olive trees. The olive tree was offered by goddess Athena as a present to the citizens of Kecropia (Athens’ previous name of their king Kecropas) while god Poseidon who was the second contestant for the naming of the city, offered an spring with salty water. Athena was finally the winner so the city was named after her.
At 11:15 we were back at the corner of Makriyianni and Areopagitou str., waiting to enter the New Museum of Acropolis. The whole building is of exceptional construction, having preserved the ruins and foundlings during excavation, with a glass floor to protect it and at the same time visitors being able to walk on it to the museum and have a look at the ancient Athenean neighborhood underneath. We visited different parts of the museum and got to see both the authentic sculpture of the Parthenon and the replicas of those that have been transferred to London by Lord Elgin.
At 1:00 we had a nice view of Athens from the cafeteria on the second floor and finally we were free to spend lunch time on our own. That was an opportunity for doing some shopping at the old or modern part of Athens.
At 6:00 in the afternoon we finally visited the 6th General Lyceum of Aigaleo where we attended volleyball games with players from all countries. It was a nice cooperation that showed that people can be together and share things even if they come from far away, from different countries or have different cultures. There is always a way for common participation and common action.
At 7:15 we were shown parts of the school, which happens to be an open school in contrast to other Greek schools that are closed ones, meaning incorporating all sides of school live in the interior of a building.
At 8:00 we attended tradditional dances from members of a dancing club that is housed in the school and we were amazed by the skills of the dancers.
At 8:30 pupils from Greece and Italy danced and some pupils sang songs too.
At 8:50 the attendance certificates were shared to each one of the teachers and pupils partners.
At 9:00 dinner started with a buffet, offered by parents, who had cooked meals and desserts too. An orchestra played songs and all participants started dancing Greek and Foreign dances.
At about 10:30 the farewell party was coming to its end and partners were transferred to Aigaleo metro station to return to the hotel.
It was a perfect union of YoUtopia family once more. We, the Greek partners, hope that we made you feel at home and wish that you are going to visit our country again.
End of works of the 4th visit in Aigaleo, Athens, Greece.
