UPDATE - August 6 2020 - It has been awhile - but I still am around, still have been collecting sources and still intend to continue plugging things in. Hope to start adding more again within the month - ahhh the life of an archivist!!!

Also - transmedia (interactive narratives) has become so much more and is still expanding, expanding, expanding!

In this new format, the menu has many sub menus - make sure to click the ^ arrow to open more to explore.

----------------------------

Transmedia is used in many different ways leading to the need to use the surrounding context to determine full meaning (in a way, the very definition of transmedia has a transmedial property to it ;)

A very basic definition would be one of media delivered in multiple formats/platforms.

The term crossmedia is sometimes used as a synonym and sometimes used to refer more to a project that delivers the same basic content over different platforms/mediums leaving transmedia to be used when multiple pieces of the narrative/concept span multiple platforms. In that sense, a transmedia project uses multiple forms of content delivery (multiple media platforms) with each form providing an individual, unique experience, while tied into a larger concept/universe. Marsha Kinder in her book, "Playing with Power in Movies, Television, and Video Games: From Muppet Babies to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (1991, 1993) - uses the term transmedia intertextuality to define and discuss how narrative for children's projects moves across multiple sources and has levels of interaction.

Stephen E. Dinehart uses the term transmedial and transmedial play to describe a type of experience where the experience is not static. "In a transmedial work the viewer/user/player (VUP) transforms the story via his or her own natural cognitive psychological abilities, and enables the Artwork to surpass medium. It is in transmedial play that the ultimate story agency, and decentralized authorship can be realized. Thus the VUP becomes the true producer of the Artwork. The Artist authored transmedia elements act a story guide for the inherently narratological nature of the human mind (see illustration) to become thought, both conscious and subconscious, in the imagination of the VUP." narrativedesign.org/2008/05/transmedial-play-cognitive-and-cross-platform-narrative/

Transmedia storytelling/entertainment/narrative is another popular topic using the concept of transmedia. Transmedia storytelling as defined by Henry Jenkins: "Transmedia storytelling represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience." www.technologyreview.com/Biotech/13052/ and www.henryjenkins.org/2007/03/transmedia_storytelling_101.html

Many often use the single word transmedia to mean transmedia storytelling (see the article thevarsity.ca/articles/24855 for an example). Transmedia is not a new idea, rather it is finding a resurgence in interest (check out pganmc.blogspot.com/2009/03/power-of-transmedia.html and transmedia-arts.com/ for some more historical references).

See this site's page on Transmedia Storytelling and Crossmedia or Transmedia for more resources as well as the glossary of terms and the page on the Producers Guild of America credit - "Transmedia Producer"
