Storify

Storify is a tool that students can use to tell a story using social media, or showcase their tweets, posts, pictures, and videos all on one page. The following video provides an overview of Storify, Haiku Deck, and the curation process.

Please review the following video overview and tutorial of Storify. Below the video you can review a step-by-step review of the process using annotated screenshots.

1. LOG IN TO STORIFY:

Visit storify.com using Google Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. Click “sign up” and sign in with Facebook, Twitter or your Email address.

2. CREATE A NEW STORY:

The “New Story” button is located at the top right of the screen.

3. GIVE YOUR STORY A TITLE AND DESCRIPTION:

Storify will now walk you through giving your story a title, a description, searching for elements and adding text. Start off by adding a title and description for your story.

4. SEARCH FOR CONTENT:

In the search field, you can search keywords on social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, and Google.

Choose which site you want to search under, for example Twitter. Then enter a search term — for example “digital resumes.” You can either use a hashtag or a keyword/phrase. Now you can easily grab content from that website by dragging it into your timeline, or double-clicking the post. Once it is on your timeline, you can rearrange the order by dragging the post to where you want it.

While searching Twitter, you may want to exclude retweets, which you can do by unchecking a box you see just below the search field. This eliminates most duplicate tweets.

5. ADD TEXT:

If you hover the mouse over the newly dragged post, you may “Click to Add Text” to type a reaction to that particular post. (Note that this “Click to Add Text” bar only appears when you move your cursor onto your timeline.)

You can provide a running commentary if you’d like. Perhaps you want to separate photos out into categories, or give chronological headings.

6. PUBLISH YOUR STORY:

Click “Save Now,” then to publish a story, you must click the blue “Publish button.”

A slim, green dialog box will pop up informing you that your story has been published and that you can now share it with others.

Next, a screen will come up called “Share & notify.” Notify allows you to type a customized message to let people know that you have re-posted their posts/images/videos. This is not necessary for you to publish your story, but it may be to your benefit. People may retweet these messages, and send others to see your story on your website. This helps develop your digital identity as you share and connect with others.

7. SHARE YOUR STORY ONLINE:

When you visit the publicized page of your story, you can share and edit the settings for your story. You can change the template, or layout of your story. You can grab an embed code to paste the story on your website or blog. Finally, you can click the edit button to go back and tweak things.

If you plan on using Storify often, you may want to place the “bookmarklet” tool on your bookmarks bar. This lets you add media from anywhere online to your Story. To do this, click on the Storify button, and choose “bookmarklet.” Then drag the blue rectangle named “Storify Bookmarklet” onto your bookmarks bar.
