Padlet

CREATE AND COLLABORATE!

Padlet is a free online virtual wall or bulletin board that allows people to express their thoughts on a common topic easily. It works like an online sheet of paper where people can put any content (e.g. images, videos, documents, text) anywhere on the page, together with anyone, from any device.

Pedagogical Uses

Padlet is a great way to create a collaborative classroom where teachers can pose questions or discussions and create brainstorm sessions to elicit student responses. With Padlet, teachers can display information by text, image or video for assessing prior knowledge, assess learned content and create reflections. In connection with Common Core Standards, Padlet addresses the use of technology such as for example in grades 6-8:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.6

Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.6

Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and link to and cite sources as well as to interact and collaborate with others, including linking to and citing sources.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.6

Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas efficiently as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

With the ability and features like exporting, subscribing, emailing and social sharing, teachers can easily make classroom wall posts collaborative. Besides using Padlet with students, it can also be used with other teachers to collaborate and share ideas.

Limitations

A limitation of Padlet is that if your classroom is comprised of a large number of students then the wall will look busy and too populated that not all comments could be readable. As with any other digital tool, Padlet is internet based and so it will be dependent on good internet connection.

Conclusion

Padlet is a great technological teaching tool for making easy class projects and managing groups with easy interaction, collaboration, sharing and learning of ideas. The interactivity of the application is a great way for students to be actively engaged and participate in the learning process. Since it is web based application, students will be able to access it from different devices such as smartphones, tablets and other devices with internet connection.
