Health Education- Body Image Unit Plan

Students Prior Knowledge:

The students discussed how the brain and CNS system work as well as mental illnesses such as depression and bipolar. They have been introduced to positive self-images during middle school PE but there is a one year gap between middle school and 10th grade health. This gap can leave a large whole in the educational flow and the reinforcement the students need when surrounded by the media and social networking. This unit will discuss how the media affects body image, positive and negative ways to deal with body image issues and re-connect the issues to previously learned information such as depression and lead into teen suicide and drug abuse.

Overall Learning Objective and Essential Questions:

The purpose of this unit is understand how body image and self-image is determined and how all types of media influence our body and self-image.

• What is body image?

• Where and how do we see bodies displayed the most?

• What types of advertisements are marketed and to whom?

Overall Reflection:

There was be some type of technology used in each lesson even if it is just a projector to explain a project. The students will used a variety of activities including hands on assignments, researching and presenting to their peers.
