My Experience in Assisting my Mom during her Telemedical Consultation
with Dr. Reynaldo Joson

May 5, 2020, I got the chance to assist my mom during her telemedical consultation with Dr. Rey Joson. I was overwhelmed that I was able to experience this different kind of medical consultation. Months before my mother’s scheduled appointment, my mom was really scared and can’t really sleep well due to the fact that she started to feel a lump on her right lateral rib during the implementation of the Enhanced Community Quarantine. Because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, she wasn’t able to visit the hospital to have her lump checked. We were really scared that it might get worse. Thankfully, she found out about Dr. Rey’s Telemedical Consultation that enabled her to have an online consultation even with the comfort of staying at home. I was amazed by how he organizes and plans the appointment of his patients. All instructions were already stated at the website with clear explanations that helped us to prepare the things that we need and what to expect. He also has a specific platform to be used so that patients won’t be confused. Before the start of the consultation, Dr. Rey kept on updating us whether there was a delay or not because we knew that we’re not the only patient. Those updates kept us relaxed while waiting.
At the start of the consultation, I was quite nervous because I haven’t met Dr. Rey yet, unlike my mom, wherein he became her doctor from her last surgery. She greeted my mom politely and brightened up the mood by saying “kamusta ka?” with a thoughtful voice. At that point, I became more comfortable, since I realized how jolly he is. He first checked if my mom’s concern was related to her old surgery. He did it by teaching my mom what to do. He does not only look for signs and symptoms, but he also educates his patients for them to learn to take care of their own body, especially in this time of pandemic. I don’t really know how he will see the lump on my mom, since it can be hard to be seen on the video call, but when we sent the pictures and videos in all angles, he immediately told us that he saw what the problem is. As a 1st year pre-med student, I quite knew a few things on what to do to check for a lump, so I did what I think I have to do to help him to further see what my mom’s diagnosis is. He then appreciated how I assisted my mom. I really felt touched on how he appreciated the little things that we’re doing. He asked me to measure the lump. He was so helpful, and he guided me to get the accurate measurements. He was so good because he then figured out the diagnosis of my mom and thankfully, my mom was relieved. He explained everything to my mom clearly and made sure that she understands it.
This was such a great experience. He did a great job on how to handle his patient online. His patients can really be empowered and will feel safe for the duration of the consultation. It was really very convenient for us since we were able to do it at home successfully even without a face-to-face communication. I would recommend patients to have a consultation with Dr. Reynaldo Joson because based on my experience, I felt the care of Dr. Rey to my mom even though we did it only through google hangouts. I certainly believe that even after the Enhanced Community Quarantine is lifted, we can still be at risk of being infected by this virus. Therefore, Telemedical Consultation shall be continued and shall be considered to be a part of the new norm.
