We are all nade of stars

by Bob on February 24, 2007

I heard a song by Moby, and saw his video when it came out in 2002 from his album "18". It was a somewhat underpinned take on the message of the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" by Kubrick and the original book written by Arthur C. Clarke.

Now the way Moby crafted the lyrics and the video, which contained a lot of rock and movie and fashion 'stars', and there were a lot of stars in it, although some fleetingly, it painted our modern world situation.

The point was that we are not ourselves anymore. We are imitating and trying to emulate the stars we see on TV, film, in videos, etc. So, as we lose ourselves to oblivion, we are then just shallow imitations of movie stars and hence we are all made of stars now.

The message of Number Six in "The Prisoner" series in the 1960s was just that and a little more. It pre-saged the 21st century techno-culture.

Not only did we lose ourselves in the passive and subliminal Faustian bargain. We lost all and became nothing but a numeric value in some computer memory defining who we are now, instead of a nice cozy neighborhood where people know each other by name and face and family and cared about each other intimately.

So it goes. We hope the passive Faustian bargain will be reversed. At least then I can introduce myself by name and not by number.
